Iris Mittenaere, formally known as Miss France, took home the Miss Universe title and crown! France is one of only three countries that has been present at every Miss Universe pageant since its inception in 1952, along with Canada and Germany. Iris Mittenaere is the first champion from Europe in more than a decade and only the second Miss France to be crowned in 65 editions of the Miss Universe pageant. Former France native, Christiane Martel won Miss Universe in 1953 on just the second edition of the competition and since then there has been a 63-year title drought until this year when Iris Mittenaere competed against 85 other beautiful and diverse women.

The Miss Universe organization is focused on celebrating cultures and empowering women to overcome the struggles of life. Mittenaere does just that and more. She is so much more than just a pretty face, she has studied science most of her life and has her goals set to become a dental surgeon after graduating. Her parents were both teachers and raised her to always value education. She plans to use her new platform  to advocate education for dental and oral hygiene as well as education for children and young women.

The crowns change every couple of years, this particular crown has only been worn by two other contestant winners and is estimated to be worth over $300,000! The crown was hand fabricated in Czech and was inspired by the Manhattan skyline. This crown is decorated with 311 pieces of diamonds, 5 pieces of blue topaz, 198 pieces of blue sapphire, 33 pieces of crystal and 220 grams of gold. This crown is a showstopper for sure! Congrats Miss Universe!
